In this video I explain how a lack of vitamin C can cause scurvy. In disaster situations food is not readily available. If people do not eat food then they are not getting enough vitamin C and this can lead to scurvy which can lead to a slow and painful death.
Without vitamin C our bodies do not maintain collagen. Without collagen all connective tissues in the body become unstable. Vitamin C is necessary for a strong immune system. Without vitamin C people are more susceptible to colds, flues, cancers, and other diseases. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that keeps our cells from being destroyed by free radical oxidation processes in the body.
In a SHTF scenario people are going to be experiencing food shortages and this will result in a lack of vitamin C which will lead to scurvy.
One of the best ways to prep for vitamin C is to buy supplies of chewable vitamin C wafers or tablets. They are easy to chew. They are easy to store, and they are easy to take with you wherever you go. Next, I would suggest to stock up also on regular vitamin C tablets. The only disadvantage to the tablets is that you have to have water to swallow them. Along side the chewable vitamin C wafers are the chewable gummi types of vitamin C candies.
People should be aware of a few of the wild edible plants that have a high vitamin C content such as dandelions, chickweed, purslane, and some pine needles. Wild berries such as wild strawberries, and wild black berries also have a high vitamin C content. Surprisingly, even meat has vitamin C. But, if you over cook the meat, you might destroy the vitamin C.
Humans do not manufacture their own vitamin C in their bodies like most of the animals do, so for a prepper having access to a lot of vitamin C to prevent scurvy is very important. When a person has scurvy they bleed a lot. They have bleeding gums. Their skin bruises, and even their blood vessels spring leaks and bleeding takes place into various tissues.
Scurvy was a big problem for sailors during the 1500's, 1600's, and the 1700's and it is estimated that over 2 million sailors over the last 400 years have died of scurvy while at sea. This is a lesson that modern day preppers should take note of because when the electrical grid goes down it will be to late to buy seeds, or buy vitamin C supplements.
